Universal School Lunch Act Signed!

Govenor Lujan-Grisham signed SB4, the Universal School Lunch Act, into law today at Pinon Elementary School in Sant Fe.  Several members of NMAND (Debbie Luffey, Rebecca Lamoreaux and Cassandra Vanderpool) have been working on a task force with Kendal Chavez, Food and Hunger Advisor in the governor's office, emphasizing meal quality in this bill, and were in invited to attend this festive event.

New Mexico is the 5th state to pass a Universal School Lunch Act.  Besides free breakfast and lunch for all children the New Mexico bill emphasized meal quality and use of locally grown foods.  Additionally, the NM bill is the first that will evaluate food waste to evaluate cost and acceptance of foods.  Read more about the bill here.
