Clinical Dietitian - Acoma-Cañoncito-Laguna Indian Health Service


Position is located at the Acoma-Cañoncito-Laguna Service Unit, Clinical Services Division in Acomita, New Mexico (1 hr commute from ABQ). The incumbent manages the clinical dietetics program for ambulatory and inpatient care and serves as the subject matter expert on medical nutrition and community based food and nutrition resources and reports directly to the Clinical Director.



  • Monitor clinical dietetic programs to ensure conformance to nutritional and quality standards.
  • Plan and conduct dietetic or nutritional programs to assist in the promotion of health and control of disease.
  • Consult with physicians and health care personnel to determine nutritional needs and diet restrictions of patients.
  • Advise patients and their families on nutritional principles, dietary plans, diet modifications, and food selection and preparation.
  • Counsel individuals and groups on basic rules of good nutrition, healthy eating habits, and nutrition monitoring to improve their quality of life.
  • Assess nutritional needs, diet restrictions and current health plans to develop and implement dietary-care plans and provide nutritional counseling.
  • Plan and conduct training in dietetics, and nutrition for medical students, health-care personnel, and the general public.


Applicants must meet one of the following requirements for all grade levels:
  • Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in the fields of dietetics, food, nutrition, food service management, institution management, or related science. The educational program must have been accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. For dietitian positions, the curriculum must have been in accordance with the qualifying requirements established by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) in effect at the time of graduation. OR
  • Completion of a coordinated undergraduate program, internship, or other clinical component approved by Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) for dietitians or nutritionists. OR
  • Professional registration as a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN). OR
  • Current employee assigned to a position in this occupational series as of September 2017.
In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below:


Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Evaluating, managing and providing a comprehensive clinical nutrition and dietetics program including infection control, safety and sanitation, providing nutritional management of a variety of chronic medical problems, ambulatory care and community nutrition programs.
